Schumer Preparing Strong Public Plan Option
Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., a member of the key Senate Finance Committee and advocate for a government-run health insurance plan, said yesterday he would abandon all other possible compromises in favor of immediately creating a public plan that "would operate on "a level playing field" with private insurers," CongressDaily reports. Other proposals have included a plan that would establish health insurance co-ops with government seed money or "trigger" the creation of a public plan only if private insurers fail to meet certain targets for containing costs and improving access.

Teens Need To Hear About 'More Than Abstinence,' Philadelphia Inquirer Editorial Says
Although it is "important for other young people to hear" Bristol Palin"s message "about how hard it is to be a teenage mother," her "lesson falls short by suggesting that any teen can successfully avoid premarital sex," a Philadelphia Inquirer editorial says. Palin, who gave birth in December 2008 after an unintended pregnancy and is the daughter of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R), has "changed her tune" since she said in a February interview that teen abstinence is ""not realistic at all,"" the editorial states. It adds that Bristol Palin -- now an "abstinence ambassador" for the Candie"s Foundation -- recently said that abstinence is "realistic" and that it is the "harder choice, but it"s the safer choice."The editorial continues that Palin is correct that "[a]bstinence is the only foolproof way to avoid pregnancy" and sexually transmitted infections. However, "any viable lesson about avoiding teen pregnancy should include methods besides avoiding sex, including the use of condoms," the editorial says. Recent studies have shown that abstinence-only sex education programs have had "no measurable impact on delaying teens from having sex for the first time," according to the editorial, which adds that teen pregnancy rates rose 5% between 2005 and 2007 after years of declines. Additionally, three out of 10 U.S. girls will get pregnant by age 20, a figure that increases to more than 50% for Hispanics and blacks. Acceleron And Celgene Initiate Phase 2 Study Of ACE-011 To Treat Chemotherapy-Induced Anemia

Acceleron Pharma, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company developing novel therapeutics that modulate the growth of cells and tissues including red blood cells, bone and muscle, and Celgene Corporation (NASDAQ: CELG) announced the initiation of a second Phase 2 clinical study of ACE-011. This Phase 2 clinical trial is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study designed to evaluate the potential of ACE-011 to treat chemotherapy-induced anemia in patients with metastatic breast cancer. ACE-011 is a novel therapeutic agent that has been shown to increase levels of red blood cells and hemoglobin and stimulate new bone formation. ACE-011 works through a novel mechanism by inhibiting certain members of the TGF-beta superfamily while potentially avoiding the erythropoietin pathway. "We are pleased to build on the robust hematologic effects observed in earlier studies of ACE-011 by initiating this Phase 2 clinical trial in breast cancer patients with chemotherapy-induced anemia," said Matthew Sherman, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of Acceleron. About Chemotherapy-Induced Anemia Anemia is one of the most common and debilitating complications associated with cancer chemotherapy, which depletes and prevents formation of red blood cells, leading to incapacitating fatigue and weakness. The vast majority of therapies approved and in development for anemia target the erythropoietin pathway. However, recent studies have suggested an increased risk of mortality associated with this class of therapy, arising from exposure to high levels of recombinant erythropoietin and its derivatives, which may stimulate tumor progression and increase the occurrence of thromboembolic events. About ACE-011 ACE-011, a soluble form of the activin receptor type IIA (ActRIIA), is a biologic therapeutic that binds to and prevents signaling of several members of the TGF-beta protein super family, and has been shown to stimulate red blood cell production, promote bone formation, and inhibit tumor growth and metastasis. ACE-011 is the first in a novel class of anemia therapies. In Phase 1 clinical studies in healthy volunteers, ACE-011 had an encouraging safety profile, increased levels of hemoglobin and hematocrit, biomarkers of bone formation, and bone mineral density.
