Climate Change: Are New Policies An Opportunity Or Barrier To The Biofuel, Renewable Chemicals Industries?
Pending climate change legislation and regulations for the Renewable Fuel Standard are creating an uncertain environment for investment in advanced biofuels and biobased chemicals. The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) announced that executives of biofuel and industrial biotechnology companies as well as representatives of NGOs will offer their views on how the industry might fare under carbon accounting rules during the 2009 World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioprocessing, to be held July 19-22, 2009 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Foreign Aid Donors Should Prioritize Maternal Mortality In Developing Countries, NYT Opinion Piece Says
One of the "most lethal forms of sex discrimination" is the "systematic inattention to reproductive health care, from family planning to childbirth" in developing countries, New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof writes. According to Kristof, a woman dies every minute somewhere in the world from pregnancy or childbirth complications, and 20 times that number suffer childbirth injuries. Providers of foreign aid, including the U.S., "have never shown much interest in maternal mortality, and impoverished women are typically the most voiceless, neglected people in their own countries -- so they die at astonishing rates," Kristof writes.Kristof highlights the childbirth experience of a 19-year-old Pakistani woman named Shazia Allahdita whose infant died in childbirth after her relatives refused to take her to the hospital because they did not want to pay for the taxi fare. Kristof writes that "[i]f men had uteruses, "paternity wards" would get res, ambulances would transport pregnant men to hospitals free of charge, deliveries would be free, and the Group of Eight industrialized nations would make paternal mortality a top priority." Kristof notes that there is "the dawn of a global movement against maternal mortality," with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon working with the U.S. and other countries to plan a "landmark global health session" on Sept. 23. The session will focus, in part, on maternal health, which Kristof terms a "milestone." He concludes, "My dream is that Barack and Michelle Obama will leap forward and adopt this cause -- and transform the prospects for so many young women like Shazia" (Kristof, New York Times, 7/29). FDA Clears Hologic R2(TM) DigitalNow(TM) HD Software Application

Hologic, Inc. (Hologic or the Company) (Nasdaq: HOLX), a leading developer, manufacturer and supplier of premium diagnostics, medical imaging systems and surgical products dedicated to serving the healthcare needs of women, announced that it has received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance for its R2(TM) DigitalNow(TM) HD software application. The R2 DigitalNow HD software is the only FDA-cleared application intended to process digitized screen-film mammograms for comparison purposes. The product is now available worldwide. By collaborating with radiologists to understand the demands of reading digital mammograms, Hologic created the R2 DigitalNow HD software, which adapts each digitized film image to a selected contrast and tissue intensity that models a digital mammography system. It also embeds a series of look-up tables in the image that allow Integrated Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) mammography conformant workstations to draw out less evident regions of density within digitized films.(1) "The DigitalNow HD software is designed to enhance workflow by promoting consistency in the digital mammography reading environment," said Julian Marshall, director, R2 product management & principal engineer at Hologic. "One of the most powerful capabilities of this product is that images already digitized by R2 DigitalNow software and stored in PACS can be routed to R2 DigitalNow HD and reprocessed."
