Mechanism That Protects Somatic Cells Against The Behaviour Of Germ Cells Identified
Almost all organisms evolve from a single cell, a fertilised egg. In the first hours after fertilisation, the fate of its future development is determined. It is dictated by the separation of cells that will become sperm and ovules - germ cells-, from the remaining cells, which will be responsible for forming the body - organs and tissues -, and that comprise the somatic cell line. Scientists at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), headed by Jordi Casanova, research professor at CSIC, have identified the mechanism that protects somatic cells against the behaviour of germ cells. When this mechanism fails, the embryo dies. Made in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, this finding could be universal. This research was published yesterday in the advanced online edition of EMBO Reports.

Tiller Murder Prompts Abortion Providers To Re-Evaluate Protective Measures, Security
The recent murder of Kansas abortion provider George Tiller has prompted other providers nationwide to reassess their need for protective measures against violent actions from opponents of abortion rights, the AP/San Francisco Chronicle reports. In the days following Tiller"s murder, many clinic officials nationwide said that they had contacted law enforcement and examined their existing security measures. U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder also ordered the U.S. Marshals Service to provide security to several clinicians and facilities. According to the AP/Chronicle, violence against abortion providers in the 1980s and 1990s forced many to take various precautionary measures in and around their clinics, while some underwent training to protect themselves.Kate Michelman, former president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, said the election of former President George W. Bush, an abortion-rights opponent, helped alleviate some violence against abortion providers. However, she said that she believes Tiller"s murder might indicate the situation is changing during the first months of President Obama"s administration. Obama has rejected abortion-rights opponents" calls for restrictions on the procedure and also reversed the "global gag rule," or "Mexico City" policy.Michelman said, "Historically, when those who oppose a woman"s right to decide are frustrated politically, they get more violent," adding, "I have been thinking about this ever since the [Obama] election." She said that some providers will remain fearful even though she believes clinics are now safe. "In the end ... if someone is out to get you and they are determined and have a chorus encouraging them, ... there"s not much you can do to stop them," Michelman said. Provider LeRoy Carhart, who provided abortion services at Tiller"s clinic, said that people who commit violence against abortion providers should be charged with hate crimes (Hanna, AP/San Francisco Chronicle, 6/3). National Survey Looks At HIV/AIDS In South Africa
According to the results of a national survey conducted in 2008 and released Tuesday, HIV prevalence among South Africans between the ages of 15 and 24 dropped from "a high of 10.3 percent in 2005 to 8.7 percent last year, with the decreases most marked among teenagers," AFP/Google.com reports (AFP/Google.com, 6/9). The Telegraph writes, "HIV prevalence in children between 2 and 14 fell from 5.6 per cent in 2002 to 2.5 per cent last year, mainly thanks to the spread of drugs to prevent women passing on the virus to their children" (Telegraph, 6/10).

Gore Receives FDA Approval For Next Generation Of Large Diameter GORE VIABAHN(R) Endoprosthesis With Heparin Bioactive Surface

W. L. Gore & Associates (Gore) today announced that it has received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market the most up-to-date design for the GORE VIABAHN® Endoprosthesis for device diameters 9 - 13 mm. The next generation of the large diameter product enables streamlined deployment on the same 0.035" guidewire and TIP to HUB direction as the 5 - 8 mm sizes. Additional modifications to the large diameter GORE VIABAHN Endoprosthesis include radial device expansion, a contoured proximal edge and a lower profile that is now available for most sizes. "The self-expanding, covered, GORE VIABAHN Endoprosthesis offers elegant and versatile endovascular solutions to difficult vascular problems," said Michael B. Silva, Jr., MD, Professor of Vascular Surgery, Professor of Radiology and Director of the Texas Vascular Center, University of Texas Medical Branch. "The latest improvements to the GORE VIABAHN Endoprosthesis with Heparin Bioactive Surface, including smaller delivery profile and 0.035" wire compatibility for the larger diameter endografts, will allow us to easily deliver the larger devices to more locations. Treating difficult vascular problems requires good skills and good equipment. We just got some cool new enhancements to our toys." The GORE VIABAHN Endoprosthesis family of devices is constructed with a durable, reinforced, biocompatible, expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) liner attached to an external nitinol stent structure. The product"s flexibility enables it to traverse tortuous areas and to conform to the complex anatomy of the artery. "The recent modifications to the GORE VIABAHN Endoprosthesis device underscores our commitment to continually provide our customers with next-generation, innovative products for the treatment of Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) in the iliac artery," said Erin Hutchinson with the Gore Peripheral Vascular Business. "Gore strives to be at the forefront of technology innovation and we"re pleased to provide interventionalists with an improved version of the large diameter devices that will allow more patients to receive safe and effective interventional therapies for the treatment of PAD in iliac arteries." The original device configuration in 6 - 8 mm sizes was initially approved by the FDA in 2005 for treating PAD in the superficial femoral artery (SFA). In 2007, Gore added a 5 mm size and made modifications to the device, including reducing its profile and adding a Heparin Bioactive Surface. In 2008, Gore received approval for large diameters of the GORE VIABAHN Endoprosthesis 9 - 13 mm for the indication of improving blood flow in patients with symptomatic peripheral artery disease in iliac artery lesions. Last month, Gore announced that the FDA approved a manufacturing change to the device in order to remove excess material at the device margin, resulting in a contoured edge at the proximal end. The device is the only stent-graft approved by the FDA for the treatment of patients suffering from PAD in superficial femoral and iliac artery lesions. W. L. Gore & Associates
