New Bisphenol A Study Is Of Very Limited Relevance To Human Health
The following statement can be attributed to Steven G. Hentges, Ph.D. of the American Chemistry Council"s (ACC) Polycarbonate/BPA Global Group. Dr. Hentges" comments are in regard to a study from researchers at North Carolina State University (NCSU) and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). The study, "Neonatal bisphenol A exposure alters rat reproductive development and ovarian morphology without impairing activation of gonadotropin releasing hormone neurons," was funded by NIEHS and published online June 17 by the journal Biology of Reproduction. The study was co-authored by Heather B. Patisaul and Heather B. Adewale of NCSU and Wendy N. Jefferson and Retha R. Newbold of NIEHS.

Uganda To Distribute ITNs To All Citizens
The Ugandan ministry of health said that everyone in the country will receive free insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) to prevent malaria beginning in September, James Kakooza, the state minister for primary health care, said, New Vision/allAfrica.com reports. Kakooza said children and mothers will be the priority, but that the goal is to make the 17.4 million imported ITNs available to everyone. Insurers Join Public Debate With New Ad Campaign
The insurance industry so far has "stayed at the bargaining table and held its fire in the ad wars," but "now, the industry is speaking up, not with an attack but with a seven-figure, national cable TV ad buy starting Monday in favor of affordable bipartisan health reform that can cover everyone," Politico reports. "But make no mistake: The ads are sending a strong don"t-tread-on-us message, not so much a shot across the bow of reform as a reminder of the industry"s ability to weigh in at any time, with messages pro or con." The 30-second ads from America"s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) "pushes for bipartisan reform that includes affordable, universal coverage that doesn"t deny insurance to those with pre-existing health conditions," but doesn"t attack the idea of a government-run insurance plan - a proposal the industry vehemently opposes." The ad "will be supported by a complementary print campaign that is also set to launch this week."

Heart Disease Researcher Wins Scholarship

Accredited Practising Dietitian and PhD student Janice Sangster has been awarded the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA)/Unilever Australasia Postgraduate Research Scholarship for her work on weight loss, physical activity and heart disease. Janice will carry out a lifestyle program to encourage people with heart disease to be a healthy weight and take part in regular physical activity. She hopes her research will help dietitians find better ways to treat and manage cardiovascular disease, particularly in rural areas. According to Australian Bureau of Statistics figures, cardiovascular disease is the number one killer in Australia, responsible for 34 per cent of all deaths1. And a healthy weight and keeping active are key to optimal heart health. "Having this scholarship is a life-line. I can now meet regularly with my research advisors in Sydney and access training and conferences that will enhance my research. For me this means conducting research in rural areas is no longer an isolating experience," said Ms Sangster. Unilever Australasia Nutrition Manager, Megan Cobcroft said: "Unilever is pleased to support this scholarship that aims to assist Accredited Practising Dietitians undertake practice-based research in the areas of diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease."
