Vision For A Truly Unique Medical Education At Oakland University's School Of Medicine Taking Shape

Administrators, faculty and staff are making considerable progress toward the opening of the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, which plans to begin accepting student applications in 2010 pending accreditation by the Liaison Committee for Medical Education. Should the accreditation process proceed according to current expectations, officials will look to take advantage of a full recruiting cycle starting in the spring of next year and to welcome the school"s inaugural class in the fall of 2011. "We have devoted tremendous time and effort to develop an innovative, high quality curriculum and to recruit top-level faculty for the school," said Dr. Robert Folberg, the medical school"s founding dean. "We are working to ensure that every detail is given full attention so that the medical education programs we offer will attract the best and brightest students." Folberg said that in addition to the appointments of six distinguished associate deans, a great deal of progress has been made in the appointment of experienced and knowledgeable clinical faculty from Beaumont Hospitals. Meanwhile, administrators also have nearly completed the hiring of the school"s basic science faculty. Folberg explained that all of these eminently qualified, master educators have been identified through a comprehensive national search process. In addition, work on the medical school"s first home in O"Dowd Hall on the campus of Oakland University will be complete by the end of June. The new facilities will include faculty offices, breakout classroom space and much more. The partnership between Oakland University and Beaumont Hospitals will help elevate the quality of health care in the region by producing doctors who are knowledgeable, competent and trained to listen to their patients, communicate effectively and show the utmost compassion in patient care. The medical school will welcome research opportunities and partnerships that help bring about medical advances to improve health and wellbeing of patients in the region and around the world.
